Karen is home! The picture says it all. She got home around lunchtime today.

Lots of visitors
This snowy, cold Sunday afternoon brought a load of visitors, namely our children. They have not seen Grandma for two or three weeks so it was nice for everyone to give her a hug. The younger ones did not know what to say but were happy to see her and Karen enjoyed seeing the kids [...]
A Friday evening in ICU
This morning they drained a bunch of fluid from near Karen’s right lung. The fluid was not actually in her lung, it was next to her lung. I’m not quite sure where the fluid came from but it might be from the damaged liver. Draining the fluid caused an hour or two of horrible, intense [...]
Recliner, a procedure, and blood pressure
Karen was moved to a recliner where she could be more comfortable and also see outside the window. That’s her first time out of bed in two weeks. I bet the window is better than the view of the hospital room ceiling! For those who are not in Omaha, it’s a bright, sunny cold day [...]
“She’s Ornery!”
I just talked to Steph. Asked her how her Mom is, Steph’s first words are “she’s ornery!”
Karen breathed on her own for almost two hours this evening. Steph was holding her hand and said “Mom, can you squeeze my hand?” She did, and after that she tried to snap her fingers.
Because Karen is so thirsty, [...]
Improving but stuck on a ventilator
Karen’s labs continue to improve. Her creatinine (measure of kidney function) is 2.2 vs 2.8 yesterday (1.0 is normal). Her liver is improving also. Blood pressure and hemoglobin are both stable and her color is good. There’s no more discussion about the blood clots – I don’t know why, but it must not be a [...]
Sort of an update
I wasn’t at the hospital much yesterday, but I will try to post what I know.
Karen remains in ICU on the ventilator. They say she is still not strong enough to breathe very well on her own and that she needs the strength to repair her liver and kidneys, so they’re leaving her on the [...]
Respirator Trial
This morning the Respiratory Therapist turned down the respirator settings so Karen was breathing on her own. The breathing rate went up to 60 and the total volume went down to 200 (it should be 400-500). That means that she was breathing very fast and shallow, and that’s not what we hoped for. The lung [...]
Slow Progress
Today they are going to slight reduce the ventilator settings (from 16 down to 12, but I don’t know what those mean). They’re talking about doing trials tomorrow to see how well Karen does without the ventilator. If the trials go well, she could be removed from the ventilator (extubated) in the next day or [...]
Monday Nov 23 update
Karen’s condition is largely unchanged, but complications are starting to creep in. The x-rays of her lungs are no longer clear which is an indication of possible pneumonia. This is common in ventilated patients and they are treating it with antibiotics. Nevertheless, it’s not a welcome thing.
There are blood clots in Karen’s arm, shoulder, and [...]
